Spoil yourselves cycling

Wales is a land of mountains and countryside and if you are a keen cyclist or just an interested participant, then Southern Wales is the place for you.

The main Celtic Way, part of the National Cycling Network, travels right through the region passing some of the most stunning scenery ever with numerous local community routes branching from it leading down to the sea, or high into the mountains and valleys that make this part of Wales so stunning.

Community Routes offer the best off-road and safety cycling around the area. These traffic-free paths for cyclists are available throughout the region and are mainly on old railway routes so gradients are gentle.

The valleys and mountains of Southern Wales are covered with woodland areas for Mountain Biking, such as at Cwmcarn, near Caerphilly. A route that rises higher and higher through forests and woodlands, till it's possible to gaze over rhe distant coastline and on to the Chiltern Hills near Bristol in England.

There are plenty of historic villages and lots of outstanding rural and coastal scenery waiting to be explored. There are also a number of accommodation providers who specialise in catering for cyclists and their equipment, but don't forget to take a good map. The ordnance Survey Landranger series is perfect for this.

Make sure you're familiar with the Highway Code. The leaflet Positive Cycling from the Cyclist's Touring Club may also be useful.

Further information on community routes can be found in a number of leaflets available from the Tourist Information Centres.

Go on, spoil yourselves!
